‎2012 ANNOUNCEMENT ~ February 14, 2012
To all persons involved in H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc.:
     As our program continues to grow, very quickly, so are our demands, expenses, expectations and goals. We are so lucky to offer this exceptional program that changes people’s lives in so many positive ways. Thank you for being a part of it.
     During the 2009 to 2011 riding seasons, our list of riders went from about 20 to roughly 50, with about 25 currently on a waiting list. This is very exciting for H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc…with growth, comes change and this announcement is about the future of our program. Over several months of meetings and conversations the decision has been made to consolidate our program to one location, which will be Carson Park in Paducah. We realize this business decision will impinge on some of our riders and volunteers, of which we sincerely apologize. Knowing the reasons for this move should help you understand that our next phase for H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc. is going to be very big.
     In the past 3 years we have applied and been denied grants that would have allowed us to expand the Dexter location. However, the arena is on personal property, not deemed “commercial” and building on personal property is not allowed within the guidelines of grants we have pursued. This, in and of itself is enough to keep holding us back. Insurance is another concern. Although H.OR.S.E.S. Inc. has appropriate insurance in place, we are still on personal property which could potentially become a conflict if the arena, barn, etc. were destroyed. We would not be able to re-build, as it’s on personal property….
Having 12 horses is another challenge. We are simply out of room…..
     The board of directors of Carson Park, along with McCracken County Judge Executive have invited H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc. to be a permanent resident at Carson Park. What this means for us is:
1. More space
2. More classes offered
3. More exposure for our program
4. More opportunities for growth

Minis in Motion (Miniature horses to take to schools)
Project “Going Green” (Composting)
Interactive Vaulting
After School Projects/ field trips
Jr. Volunteer Program (for ages 11-14)
Sports Riding (Shows, Special Olympics, etc.)
Group Therapy (Utilizing a counselor or psychologist & horse)
Domestic Violence Retreat
Summer Camp (camp for kids)
Senior Project (for those 65 & over)
Mentor Program for At Risk Youth
Horse Trailer Project (Paint Horse Trailer & Apply Logo)
Instructor Workshop
Internship programs – barn manager, nonprofit leadership, horse care, office work
Grant writing – assistance through college non-profit leadership classes
     As the 2012 riding season is very near, we are currently making the transition to Carson Park, thus starting to schedule riders and volunteers. We ask that you join us in our excitement and help us build a bigger, stronger, better program by helping us change lives!

PATH, Intl. Region 4 Conference

H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc. will be hosting the PATH, Intl. Region 4 Conference. We are very excited and happy with the opportunity. The dates will be March 29-31 at Kentucky Dam Village. We are in the process of lining up presenters and setting the agenda. Please mark your calendars for this exciting weekend…we will be needing lots of help at the registration tables and in several other areas. Stay tuned for more details as we work to put together a TERRIFIC Conference!!!!

Books A Million, Horses, Inc, and Chris Skates…. Oh My

H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc has a very exciting opportunity that we are sharing with all of you. What, you ask? Gather round, Faithful Readers…….

One of our fabulous local authors, Chris Skates, will be doing a book signing at the Paducah Books A Million this weekend, September 17th from 1pm to 5pm. What makes this so fabulous? For the ENTIRE DAY, on those two dates, Books A Million will be donating between 10% and 15% of all proceeds to H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc!!!!!!! How wonderful is that?

And all you need to do? Buy a book and let the cashier know that you want part of your receipt to go to H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc.

How simple is that?

Surely, you have a book that you’ve been wanting to purchase, a magazine, a new game for game night with the family….. Just let the cashier know you want to donate to H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc and part of your purchase will go straight to feeding a horse and helping one of our amazing riders.

Exciting News…

We are very excited and proud to announce that H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc. Therapeutic Riding Center will be hosting the 2012 PATH, Intl. Region 4 Conference.

What is PATH Intl.?

PATH Intl. was founded in 1969 as the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) to promote safe and effective therapeutic horseback riding throughout the United States and Canada. Today, PATH Intl. has nearly 800 member centers and over 6,300 individual members in countries all over the world, who help and support more than 42,000 men, women and children with special needs each year through a variety of equine-assisted activity and therapy programs.

H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc. is a PATH, Intl. Center and is located within Region 4 geographical area which includes Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, and Ontario.

What does this mean for us?

This gives us the chance to host surrounding states and show them that Kentucky isn’t just Lexington! It gives us a chance to show off our beautiful area, our hospitality and southern charm. As 200+ PATH, Intl. members come together in our community to expand their knowledge about therapeutic riding, increase understanding of different special needs and enjoy the company of fellow PATH, Intl. members they also have the opportunity to browse and shop local businesses as well as become acquainted with H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc.

Volunteers’ Meeting June 21st

We need all the help you guys can give. Horses, Inc. is a very rewarding organization that gives back to those helping over and over again.

We have many many exciting events planned for this year and can use you to help get them rolling. Join us at 6pm at the Calvert City Library, 1305 5th Ave., SE, Calvert City. Next to the Civic Center. We meet for about 1 1/2 hours.

Donation

When Kathy Wallace (one of our volunteers at Cassidy Arena) asked her husband, Jesse, what he would like for Father’s Day she didn’t expect the response she got. He said, “I want you to take the money you were going to spend on me, go to Tractor Supply and buy the biggest fan they have and take it down to H.O.R.S.E.S., Inc. and give it to those kids.” What a hero and the epitome of a Dad! Thank you SO much Jesse & Kathy for the donation! The riders, volunteers and horses appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity. You sure made our sessions more comfortable! In addition, Kathy planted flowers in our pots at the barn to make our space a little prettier. Thank you guys so much!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Come have fun with us while helping those with special needs. We have volunteer opportunities available assisting with classes Monday through Thursday afternoons. You just have to be at least 14 years old, able to walk for an hour and willing to smile! Oh, and the best part of all…you get to help someone else! It’s a great feeling so come join us to experience that firsthand.

If assisting with classes isn’t your interest, we have many other volunteer opportunities available. You may like to help with one of our fundraisers. We have a 5K, Bar-B-Que on the River, Holiday Bazaar/Expo and Boots and Bridles Competition. Maybe you’d rather help care for the horses at Cassidy Arena in Paducah or help out with light office or computer work. It takes a lot of hands to keep this program operating and we appreciate any help!

Calling all volunteers! Help us spread the word!!

We are in need of help. All kinds of help. Tell everyone you know.

And then join us on May 16, 2011 at 6pm at the Calvert City Library (near the Civic Center). You will learn all kinds of information about who we are, what we do, and why we need you.

We are looking for volunteers to help with:

BBQ On THE River - need about 20 people to assist with set up/ booth sales
5K run – need about 30 people to help with preparations
H.OR.S.E.S INC. EXPO/ Boots and Bridle Competition which will be combined this year, so we need tons of help, about 50+ people to help with planning, set up, scheduling, etc.

Does any of this interest you? Are you feeling the urge to participate? Do you know anyone who would like to participate? We need all ages to help. Don’t be shy.
